One of the best things about this time of year is how easy it is to make an evening out of almost nothing. Grab dinner, wander somewhere with live music, catch a sunset, or find a park event happening nearby.

Salem has plenty of those simple summer opportunities, along with some bigger events worth putting on the calendar. And if you’re more interested in what’s changing around town, there’s a significant South Salem transit update to know about, too. As usual, we’ve rounded up a little of everything.

🎷 Capital City Retro Fest brings legendary tributes

The Gist: Capital City Retro Fest is bringing three days of classic hits to the Gerry Frank Amphitheater at Riverfront Park starting Aug. 14. Gate times kick off at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 4 p.m. on Sunday, featuring tribute bands like Red Not Chili Peppers, Taken by the Sky, and Petty Fever.

Why It Matters: Riverfront Park is already one of the best spots in Salem to relax on a summer evening. This festival brings neighbors together for great music, local eats like Aloha Grill, and a fun throwback soundtrack right on the waterfront.

🚌 A South Salem transit hub, 20 years in the making

The Gist: Cherriots has purchased about 5.7 acres at Commercial Street SE and Wiltsey Road SE for the long-planned South Salem Transit Center. The need for a south Salem hub was first identified back in 2004. Plans call for multiple bus bays, a passenger plaza, shelters and electric-bus charging, while a 2025 funding application estimated the full project at about $13 million.

Why It Matters: South Salem has been waiting decades for a dedicated off-street transfer point, and buying the property finally moves the project past the site-search stage. Cherriots still needs to finalize the budget, route assignments, construction schedule and opening date.

💗 Big, bold flavors served like home

4618 Portland Rd NE, Salem

Walk into The Manila Fiesta and you are greeted like family. Serving authentic Filipino home cooking, it’s built for easy gathering before summer fades.

Crisp, craveable lumpia vanishes fast, while the tender pork adobo, crackly lechon kawali, and coconut-chili Bicol Express deliver rich comfort. Portions are generous, service is warm, and a cold halo-halo makes for the ultimate seasonal sendoff.

🎟️ Watching films on velvet-soft seats

1127 Broadway St NE, Salem

Salem Cinema has held down the art house fort since 1982, bringing documentaries, foreign titles, and small-batch indies to town long before multiplexes took over.

Owner Loretta Miles keeps the classic art deco charm alive with cozy seating, zero commercial clutter, and thoughtful touches like Surprise Cinema mystery nights, advance screenings, and filmed operas. While summer days wind down, student and senior discounts make this quiet neighborhood staple an unbeatable value.
