📚 Summer school pays off for young readers
The Gist: About 1,000 elementary students participated in Salem-Keizer's summer literacy program, funded by $1 million in state money. First and second graders showed the biggest gains, improving their reading skills in four weeks at a pace that normally takes two and a half months. Third and fourth graders also made solid progress, though at typical school-year rates.
Why It Matters: With roughly three in four third graders reading below grade level, these early wins suggest summer school can help close gaps before they widen.
🎭 Evil Dead Musical takes over downtown theater
The Gist: Wandering Players Theatrics, the local theater group behind last year's Evil Dead The Musical, has signed on to run the former Cinebarre movie theater downtown. The seven-screen space will become a creative hub for live theater, music, comedy, dance, film, and community events. Evil Dead kicks off the new venue on October 23.
Why It Matters: Salem's arts scene just got a major boost with a permanent home for local performers and a gathering spot for creative folks across the community.
