Festivities have kicked off for the season, bringing a vibrant mix of art, music, and local dining to the streets of our historic downtown. It’s the perfect time of year to explore the blooming gardens at Bush’s Pasture Park or take a scenic walk along the waterfront as the days get longer.

Whether you’re grabbing a coffee at a local cafe or hitting the trails, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the energy and beauty of the Willamette Valley this week!

🌸 Downtown could be in for a more colorful summer

The Gist: The Salem Main Street Association is looking to brighten up our strolls by installing hanging flower baskets throughout the downtown core. They have set a goal of finding 80 sponsors to chip in $500 per basket to cover the costs of installation and upkeep. The project also features a youth work component through partnerships with Willamette Workforce Partnership and Isaac’s Room to provide jobs for local young people.
Why It Matters: Beyond just making our streets look beautiful, this program puts money directly into the pockets of local youth. It is a meaningful way to support the next generation while making our downtown district feel more welcoming for everyone who lives and works here.
👨🚒 Teamwork to keep our neighborhood safe

The Gist: Governor Tina Kotek and state fire leaders met in Salem on May 5 to coordinate a massive "all hands on deck" response for the 2026 fire season. To get ahead of a dry summer, the state has already prepped 700 ODF crews and funded a University of Oregon camera network for early fire detection. Because over 70% of fires are human-caused, officials are asking neighbors to help out by clearing dry leaves and pine needles within 100 feet of their homes.
Why It Matters: It’s reassuring to know our local and state agencies are so well-coordinated, but the real power stays with us. By taking simple steps like cleaning out gutters or moving firewood away from the house, we act as the first line of defense for our families and our favorite local trails. It’s a great time for us to look out for one another and make sure everyone is signed up for OR-Alerts before the heat kicks in.

🦦 Beignets, biscuits, and serious Riverside vibes

130 High St SE, Salem
If you’ve caught the scent of sugar and fried chicken drifting from the corner of High and Chemeketa, you’ve found The Easy Otter. This woman-owned favorite, just steps from the Elsinore, has evolved from a market cart into a downtown staple.
Summer mornings here call for the "Cherry City" beignets: a nod to local blossoms topped with white chocolate ganache and pistachios. For something savory, the smoked salmon chowder in a sourdough bowl or the Cajun mac and cheese offer a perfect, polished comfort.
Framed otter portraits and hanging parasols make a casual lunch feel like a discovery.

👟 Longtime local experts guiding every single step.

The creak of the floorboards at Gallagher Fitness Resources carries the weight of nearly three decades of stories. Since 1997, Susan & John Gallagher have maintained a space where expertise feels like a quiet conversation rather than a sales pitch.
A signed photo of Kathrine Switzer hangs behind the register, a nod to the shop’s deep roots in women’s training clinics. This summer, the community gathers for Monday Runday at the park or the upcoming Summer Solstice 5K and 10K fundraiser at Minto-Brown Island Park.
Check out the new Janji clothing line or try on Pit Viper shades during the May 18th demo! Current offer: buy 3 pairs of Feetures socks and get 1 free, thru end of May.
