A few weeks from now, summer schedules will be in full swing and weekends will disappear fast. Right now feels like the sweet spot. The weather is comfortable, the flowers are still showing off, and the city is easing into a season packed with events.

Whether you are looking for a new lunch spot, a family outing, or an excuse to stay out a little later, we found a few ideas worth adding to the list.

🐣 A new Kindergarten Savings Initiative for Oregon kids

The Gist: State leaders are heading to a Beaverton elementary school to launch the Kinder Grad program, awarding diplomas to local kindergartners. The state is sweetening this early milestone by offering a $100 contribution when families open an Embark college savings account. Combined with the existing Baby Grad program, Oregon kids can now get a $200 head start on their future before turning five.

Why It Matters: With more than one-third of Oregon students currently unable to afford college, this program plants an early seed for the high school class of 2038. Kids with savings accounts are over two times more likely to attend college, making this a small but meaningful investment in opening doors for our children.

📋 Salem's new Strategic Plan

The Gist: Salem City Council approved the city’s new 2026-2031 Strategic Plan, which is basically a five-year guide for what the city wants to focus on next. It covers things like economic development, roads and infrastructure, public safety, city finances, and keeping basic services running. The plan was also shaped by feedback from more than 600 people who responded to a community survey earlier this year.

Why It Matters: For Salem residents, this is a good look at what City Hall says it wants to prioritize over the next few years. After recent budget challenges, a lot of people are watching how the city communicates, spends money, and keeps everyday services moving. This plan gives residents something to point back to as those decisions come up.

🧶 Industrial charm meets exceptional lunching

1313 Mill St SE, Salem

If you somehow haven’t been to Lively at the Mill yet, the perfect excuse just landed. Jessica and Anton Cobb originally brought their celebrated hospitality to River Road, but this spring, they expanded into the historic former sorting room of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.

Framed by a Sam Stanley mural and blooming wisteria, it is easily the best-looking lunch spot Salem has gotten in years. Executive Chef Nathan runs the kitchen, carrying over classics like their smash burger, scratch-made bowls, & Sewell pastries.

They are the official food partner for the Music at the Mill lawn series starting 06/02!

🛶 Riverfront roots and glowing sunset paddles

serving Salem and nearby areas

Shannon Valdez of Oregon Kayak Tours practically grew up on the Willamette River, continuing a multigenerational family tradition of guiding Salem residents and guests.

Running daily tours from 8 AM to 9 PM, this homegrown outfit provides stand-up paddleboard rentals, gentle downriver floats, and illuminated sunset excursions past the city skyline.

Upcoming summer highlights usually include a Father's Day weekend paddle, the annual July riverside barbecue and agate rock contest, and Monday evening women's fellowship Bible study floats with complimentary kayak rentals.
