One of the best parts about Salem is that you never have to look very hard to find people who care about this community. This week, neighbors will be cleaning up Walter Wirth Lake, local artists are celebrating another summer together, and independent musicians have a valuable resource right here in town.

Those stories may not always make national headlines, but they make Salem a better place to live. Read right on!

🗑️ Ready to pick it up, Salem?

The Gist: The environmental nonprofit SOLVE is bringing its regional cleanup series to Salem for the very first time on Friday, July 17. Neighbors of all ages are meeting up near Walter Wirth Lake at Cascades Gateway Park from 10 a.m. to noon to team up and clear out litter. Don't worry about bringing gear!

Why It Matters: Salem is the newest city to join this effort alongside places like Portland and Bend, giving us a great chance to protect our local environment together. It's a quick, easy way to show our shared backyard some love!

What's Next: If you want to pitch in, you can sign up before heading down to the park on July 17:

🎧 Oregon's only vinyl pressing plant lives here

The Gist: Object Permanence Records opened a small warehouse north of downtown Salem this summer, becoming Oregon’s newest and only vinyl record pressing plant. The team currently runs one press and specializes in smaller batches for independent musicians and record labels.

Why It Matters: Cascade Record Pressing in Milwaukie closed last month, briefly leaving Oregon without a vinyl manufacturer. Object Permanence now gives local bands and independent labels a nearby option for turning their music into physical records instead of relying on manufacturers farther away or overseas.

The Half Penny Public House has been a South Salem gathering spot since 2009, serving hearty pub food, local drinks and plenty of live music. The menu covers everything from burgers and pasta to ribs and steaks, with the slow-roasted prime rib and baby back ribs among the longtime favorites.

Come by for dinner, then stay when the music starts. The relaxed room, friendly crowd and regular lineup of local performers make it an easy choice for a casual night out.

The Book Bin has been a downtown Salem favorite since 1983, with shelves of new and used books, gifts and plenty of unexpected finds. Serious browsers should also peek into the rare-book room, which specializes in collectible fantasy, horror and science fiction.

The shop keeps a busy calendar of book clubs and author events, but Rose may still be the biggest celebrity in the building. The resident shop cat has lived there since 2013 after being adopted from the Humane Society, and yes, petting is entirely on her terms. 😉
