There’s something special about a hometown holiday weekend. The fireworks, the community events, the familiar faces, and the local spots that become part of the tradition are what make summer in Salem feel like summer.

There’s plenty happening, from big celebrations at the fairgrounds to quieter evenings with a vineyard view. We’re also keeping an eye on the practical stuff, like road updates and city decisions that affect daily life. Here’s what’s happening close to home so you can spend less time searching and more time enjoying.

💼 $824.6 Million Budget for the New Fiscal Year

The Gist: Salem City Council approved an $824.6 million budget for the new fiscal year, which begins July 1 and guides city spending through next June.

Why It Matters: This is the plan behind many of the services people notice day to day, from emergency response and library hours to parks, recreation programs, and Center 50+. It does not end Salem’s larger budget conversation, but it does show what the city is funding for the year ahead.

🚗 Southbound I-5 Ramp Closing for Two Days in July

The Gist: The Oregon Department of Transportation is closing the southbound off-ramp for Exit 248 on Interstate 5 for two days, starting at 6 a.m. on July 8 until 6 a.m. on July 10. This follows the recent opening of the new Battle Creek Road Bridge. If you need to head that way, you can easily detour around the closure by using Exit 252.

Why It Matters: With crews working day and night, a lower 55 mph speed limit, and extra construction dust and noise, we’ll all need to pack a little extra patience and stay alert while driving through the work zone.

🌶️ Leave the grill tongs at home

189 Liberty St NE Ste 112, Salem

Your Fourth of July doesn’t require standing over a scorching grill. Noble Wave is keeping the kitchen open all day, serving up a relaxed Independence Day alternative.

Plan your weekend around the Hot Bird (a crispy fried chicken sandwich with house doink sauce) alongside authentic New Orleans po'boys on shipped-in Gambino’s bread. Pair the heat with a frozen Hurricane flight on the patio and always save room for the beignets!

🍷 Fireworks and the best view in the valley

7919 Spring Valley Rd NW, Salem

Kuenzi Family Vineyard spent years clearing land and planting vines together before opening their tasting room. The local hills offer a cool escape this July, especially if you appreciate a multi-generational labor of love.

This Saturday, July 4th, they are hosting a free evening event from 9pm to 11pm. You can bring blankets, flashlights, and snacks to watch the distant valley fireworks from the peaceful vineyard top.
