There are certain weeks where Salem feels especially connected, and this is one of them. You can see it in the crowds at local events, the families wandering downtown, and the community spaces getting new life breathed into them.

The redesigned Capitol Plaza feels like part of that story, too. More room to gather, more room to walk, more room for people to actually enjoy being there.

🏛️ Capitol Plaza reopens with Indigenous art

The Gist: Neighbors gathered at the Oregon State Capitol Plaza on May 26 to celebrate the newly renovated space on Court Street NE. The plaza now includes Oregon Voices, an installation of 11 large natural boulders carved with words and wisdom from Oregon tribal leaders, elders, and culture bearers, curated by Dr. Phillip Cash Cash. The plaza had been mostly fenced off since January 2020 for major safety and accessibility improvements, including more room for pedestrians in front of the Capitol.
Why It Matters: After years of construction, the Capitol’s front yard is once again a place where the community can gather, reflect, and take in a clearer view of the building. The new Indigenous art installation adds an important and lasting presence from Oregon’s tribes, helping the space better reflect the people and history of the state. With a larger, more walkable layout, it should also feel safer and more welcoming for future ceremonies, community events, protests, and everyday visits downtown.
🌲 Oregon 4-H Wagon Train opens registration
The Gist: Registration is officially open for the 2026 Oregon 4-H Wagon Train, a weeklong pioneer living adventure running from July 12-18 along the historic Barlow Road. Local families and volunteers can travel by covered wagon, horseback, or foot for $350, with a preparatory preview weekend happening June 6-7.
Why It Matters: This unique tradition gives our community a hands-on way to experience local history and disconnect from everyday screens. Beyond learning outdoor skills, it helps neighborhood kids build real confidence, teamwork, and lifelong memories out on the trail.

🍻 Crisp European lagers & scratch-made tacos

2195 Hyacinth St NE #162, Salem
Xicha Brewing (pronounced chee-chah) is the Pacific Northwest’s premier Latine brewery, founded by a group of friends and family with roots from New Mexico to Ecuador. The team honors Latin American culinary traditions while also giving them room to evolve.
The result is one of Salem’s most fun and welcoming spots: house-brewed European-style ales and lagers, scratch-made Latin American fusion food, and the feeling that you’ve stepped into a true neighborhood gathering place.
Drop in for the bilingual warmth, a crisp chelita, a plate of tacos, and a summer lineup full of community watch parties.

🥊 Gloves off and clippers on high

724 High St NE, Salem
Q’s Corner Barbershop has been part of Salem since 2005, with owner Quandray “Q” Robertson bringing both barbering experience and boxing roots to the High Street shop. Robertson is a former professional boxer, and Wildcat Boxing is connected to the space behind the barbershop.
Stop in for a summer trim, a Father’s Day cleanup, or one of the precision fades locals keep coming back for. Between the longtime High Street presence, the boxing connection, and KSOS radio sharing the space, Q’s Corner feels like a true Salem staple.
