As the calendar turns toward the end of March, Salem is truly beginning to shake off the winter chill. The most unmistakable sign of the season is right in our backyard: Cherry Blossom Day at the State Capitol is coming up this Saturday, March 21. It’s more than just a photo op under the pink canopy of the Capitol Mall; it’s a celebration of our community’s deep cultural ties and the official "hello" to spring in Oregon. If you haven’t taken a stroll through the blossoms yet, this weekend is the time to do it before the Willamette Valley breeze whisks them away.
Beyond the blossoms, the local scene is buzzing with a bit of everything this week. The Salem Saturday Market is back in its groove for the 2026 season at the Green Lot, offering that first taste of spring produce and hand-crafted local goods that we’ve missed all winter. For those looking for something a bit more indoor-friendly, the Willamette Heritage Center is currently hosting the "Echoes of 1776" exhibit, a fascinating look at our local history as we approach the nation’s 250th anniversary. Whether you're hunting for the perfect pint of berries or a deep dive into our state's past, there’s plenty of reason to get out and support our local vendors and venues.
Finally, keep an eye on our neighbors to the north at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, which officially opens its gates this Friday. It’s a short drive from Salem, but it’s a staple of the Mid-Willamette Valley experience that defines this time of year. Between the tulips, the local history, and the simple joy of a walk along the riverfront, there’s a renewed energy in town. Let’s make the most of it by showing up for our local shops and keeping Salem the vibrant, connected place we’re proud to call home.

🏗️ Salem’s Block 50 Project Faces Delays

The Gist: Salem’s long-planned Block 50 development, set for apartments and retail including a grocery store, has been delayed. Environmental cleanup, rising costs, and uncertain financing have slowed progress. No purchase agreement or construction timeline is in place yet, though city officials say the project is still moving forward.
Why It Matters: The development is meant to bring new residents and retail to downtown Salem, but delays show how complex projects depend on funding, cleanup, and economic conditions. It’s exciting that the city remains committed to revitalizing downtown and bringing new life to the area.
