It's easy to measure a city by the big headlines, but we think the little moments tell the story just as well. Families heading to the carousel on a warm evening. Friends meeting for live music. Visitors discovering downtown for the first time after crossing an Ironman finish line.

Those moments add up, and they make summer in Salem something special. Read on for what's happening around town this week!

The Gist: More than 2,500 athletes came to Salem for the sold-out IRONMAN 70.3 Oregon weekend, held July 17–19 at Riverfront Park. Travel Salem estimates the event generated more than $11.3 million for the regional economy, although the final economic impact has not yet been calculated.

Why It Matters: Visitors filled hotels, ate at local restaurants and shopped across the region throughout the weekend. For comparison, the 2024 event generated an estimated $15.46 million in economic activity, including 9,220 hotel room nights and more than $303,000 in transient occupancy tax revenue.

The Gist: Willamette University and Pacific University have formally agreed to merge, creating what will become Oregon’s largest private university. The combined institution will serve more than 6,000 students across campuses in Salem, Forest Grove, Hillsboro and Portland, with the corporate merger expected to be completed in early 2027.

Why It Matters: The merger is designed to give students access to a wider range of programs, research opportunities and alumni connections while keeping each school’s campuses, traditions and academic identities in place. For Salem, it strengthens Willamette’s long-term presence and connects local students to a much larger statewide university network.

The Gist: Sumo Sushi & Grill AYCE is moving into the former Shari’s Cafe & Pies building at 1270 Lancaster Drive SE. An opening date has not been announced yet, but the restaurant is already hiring for both full-time and part-time front-of-house positions. The menu is expected to include all-you-can-eat sushi, sashimi, teppanyaki and noodle soups.

Why It Matters: This familiar spot near WinCo and Lancaster Marketplace has been empty since Shari’s closed in 2024. A new restaurant will bring some life back to the corner and give east Salem diners another casual option for dinner, groups and family outings.

Venti’s Cafe + Beer Vault has been a downtown Salem favorite since 1996, serving globally inspired comfort food with plenty of choices for vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters alike. The menu is especially known for its rice bowls, wraps, burgers and mac and cheese, with plant-based proteins built into many of the options.

Downstairs, the underground Beer Vault adds a completely different feel, with rotating craft beer and a cozy spot to settle in after dinner. It’s an easy choice when everyone in the group wants something different.

Summer evenings by the river are brighter! Our community-built landmark, Salem's Riverfront Carousel is celebrating National Carousel Day this weekend with fifteen-dollar ten-ride passes at the gift shop.

If you hold a Marion Berries Baseball Berry Pass, you can also scan it for two daily rides. It’s the perfect excuse to enjoy the extended summer hours, or even drop by for the dollar rides during the last hour every Friday.
