July always has a way of slowing the clock, at least a little. Long dinners outside, live music in the evening, and Saturday mornings that somehow turn into afternoons downtown.

The Marion County Fair is back, the farmers markets are overflowing with fresh produce, and there's no shortage of reasons to stay out a little longer. Whether you're chasing fair food, finding a new favorite patio, or taking the kids for a carousel ride, this week's Scoop is packed with the kind of local plans that make summer memorable.

We rounded up the highlights, now all that's left is deciding where to start.

📬 Salem celebrates America’s 250th birthday!

The Gist: Hundreds of locals braved the rain at the Oregon State Capitol last week to kick off the nation’s 250th anniversary. The festive gathering launched a summer-long wave of historic celebrations stretching across Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Why It Matters: It is a sweet reminder of our shared roots and what makes Oregon special, right down to local treasures like Pendleton socks being packed away in a time capsule for the year 2276.

What's Next: Saturday, July 11: Bring a blanket to the Capitol Mall at 11:00 a.m. for a free outdoor concert by the Salem Philharmonia Orchestra.

📱 Consumer Cellular picks Salem for its 100th store

The Gist: The Oregon-founded wireless carrier opened its 100th company-owned retail store in Salem, marking a national expansion milestone for the Tigard-based provider and adding a new storefront to the local retail scene.

Why It Matters: It is a nice bit of local flag-planting for a homegrown Oregon brand, and one more small signal that Salem retail is finding its footing again this summer.

🚧 Summer roadwork and park upgrades are underway

The Gist: The City of Salem has kicked off a major wave of summer construction and park upgrades, funded by utility rates and the 2022 Safety and Livability Bond. Expect night work and a 30 mph slowdown on Commercial Street SE through November, while repairs on Doaks Ferry Road NW and Center Street NE will continue through September.

Why It Matters: The orange cones may be a temporary headache, but these projects are bringing some much-needed love to local neighborhoods. When the work wraps up, Salem should have safer streets, greener spaces, and more accessible places for families to get around and enjoy.

🍹 High spirits, higher vantage points

1391 Broadway St NE, Salem

Salem is a bit short on contemporary Mexican choices, making La Vida Catrina with their caliber of food and drinks a premier destination. This locally owned Broadway kitchen pairs warm nights with a stellar drink menu, featuring a fresh watermelon margarita and the signature La Llorona.

Grab a table outside, order the bacon-wrapped jalapeños, and settle in for a long, breezy summer evening.

🍦 A velvety scoop with a sheep milk twist

285 Liberty St NE Ste 130, Salem

Summer days just got sweeter as Dreamies Creamery celebrates one year in downtown Salem. Operating out of the beautifully refurbished Forge, this shop serves up rich, hard-scoop ice cream crafted entirely with locally sourced sheep milk.

It’s a fun find for anyone who loves ice cream but does not always love how traditional dairy makes them feel. The shop describes its sheep milk ice cream as lactose friendly, making it an interesting option for some dairy-sensitive dessert fans.
