🎨 Mural highlights mental health at South Salem High
The Gist: Senior Jolee McMahan unveiled a new hallway mural last month aimed at supporting her peers struggling with mental health. The artwork features a tree split between full bloom and a thunderstorm, topped with a reminder that it is fine to be a work in progress. McMahan spent about 160 hours alongside eight fellow students to complete the painting in the hallway near the cafeteria and buses.
Why It Matters: The piece offers a lasting, comforting visual for Salem students as they head between classes, reminding them they are not alone. It serves as a positive local example of how young people can use art to spark connection and strengthen the school community.
🚒 Fire Station open house brings families together
The Gist: About 300 neighbors gathered at Station 6 on 25th Street SE near the airport for a fun open house hosted by the Salem Fire Department. Visitors got an up-close look at emergency trucks, chatted with local crews, and let kids practice using a real fire hose with firefighters guiding the nozzle. Fire Chief David said these open houses give families a great chance to build warm, positive connections.
Why It Matters: Most of us only meet first responders during a crisis, making friendly gatherings like this a wonderful way to build trust across the community. Getting to know the firefighters in a relaxed setting helps kids feel safe and confident if they ever need help in the future.
